Why Safety Helmets Fail When Needed Most
Safety helmets designed to protect lives, repeatedly "fail" at critical moments and fail to provide the necessary protection? There are many complex factors behind this.
- The product quality is not up to standard
In frontline work scenarios with high risk factors such as construction and mining, safety helmets can be regarded as the last critical line of defense to ensure the safety of workers' lives. However, in recent years, there have been frequent quality issues with safety helmets. In 2019, a video of unsafe helmets on the internet sparked widespread attention. In the video, ordinary helmets were easily shattered and vulnerable to collisions, and behind it were a large number of substandard products flooding the market. Some manufacturers use inferior or waste raw materials for processing in order to reduce costs. Recycled materials have high impurities and unstable performance, resulting in brittle and low strength caps that are prone to cracking and breakage upon impact. Poor quality products seriously fail to meet the key performance standards of impact absorption and puncture resistance.
- Some products have unreasonable top design of the cap shell, and the energy dispersion structure has failed.
The energy dispersion structure at the top of safety helmet has failed, and the excessive ventilation area has weakened the protective performance. The quality of the hat hoop is unqualified and cannot provide good cushioning effect. In 2024, the Chengdu Market Supervision Bureau conducted spot checks and found that some unqualified products did not meet the standards for impact absorption and puncture resistance due to design defects.
3.Rough manufacturing processes
Inaccurate control of injection molding and forming processes results in uneven distribution of internal stress, making the safety helmet prone to cracking or breaking at weak points under impact. Issues such as poorly installed chin strap buckles or malfunctioning adjustment devices are also common, significantly compromising protection.
4.Expired and not replaced
The service life of safety helmets made of different materials varies: ABS engineering plastic helmets are recommended to last 2-3 years, while fiberglass helmets are recommended to last 3-4 years. However, a survey by the China Labor Insurance Association in 2025 shows that 32% of workers did not replace their employees on time. Overdue use leads to aging and brittle cracking of the shell material, significantly reducing the critical protective performance. The National Construction Worker Management Service Information Platform of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development has clearly stipulated the usage period of safety helmets.
